The oscillation of Space-time is called Gravitational waves. They are the disturbances in the space time. It's one of the major predictions of General Relativity.
Before general relativity, space was rigid, it neither expanded nor contracted.

Space-time is curved and this curvature depends upon the shape of matter. Thus we may expect ripples just like in water.
